Moroccan activist receives five-year jail term for criticizing ties with Israel

CRITICISM of Morocco’s normalization with Israel led to the imprisonment of a Moroccan activist.

A five-year jail term.

The verdict was the consequence of Abdul Rahman Zankad’s criticism of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel as well as the state of war in Gaza.

The activist was part of an influential Islamist association that is not legal but is tolerated by the Moroccan authorities.

The court found him guilty of incitement and insulting a constitutional institution.

The court also ordered him to pay a fine worth 50,000 Moroccan dirhams ($5,000).

Morocco normalized ties with Israel in December 2020, making it one of the few Arab nations to enter a peace deal with the Jewish state.
