Myanmar junta denies former Cambodian PM access to jailed leader Suu Kyi

CAMBODIA’s former Prime Minister Hun Sen’s plan to meet jailed civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi failed amid escalating tensions between the junta and ethnic rebel groups.

Hun Sen, who ruled Cambodia for nearly forty years, requested a meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during a recent video conversation with the junta chief.

The Cambodian leader also requested to talk with the jailed state counselor before he stepped down as prime minister last year.

Hun Sen requested the latest round of tensions between the junta and ethnic rebel groups that forced thousands to flee to neighboring Thailand last month.

Foreign leaders and diplomats also made similar requests to meet the 78-year-old Nobel laureate but were also denied access.

Suu Kyi has been serving a 27-year prison sentence for various crimes ranging from treason and bribery, to violations of the telecommunications law.

She has been transferred from prison to house arrest since last month as a health precaution due to the scorching heatwave in Myanmar.

Clashes between Myanmar’s Armed Forces and ethnic rebel groups escalated following the military coup in 2021.

Thailand’s former Prime Minister Shinawatra, a close ally of Cambodia’s Hun Sen, also seeks a mediator role in the Myanmar conflict.

Myanmar’s military chief discussed plans to hold elections in the country but has not announced any timeframe yet.
