UAE sends $15-M aid as severe flooding kill over 200 people in Kenya

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the donation of a substantial amount for the families affected by the catastrophic floods in Kenya.

The Gulf nation pledged an additional 15 million dollars to flood-hit families in Kenya just a week after delivering 40 tonnes of relief aid.

Days of heavy rains killed 240 people or more in the East African nation.

The United Nations voiced concern after dozens of cholera cases were reported in the flood-stricken country earlier this week.

The severe weather also affected several countries in East Africa such as Tanzania. Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, among others, as it sparked concerns of worsening humanitarian crisis.

Weeks of heavy rain and flooding displaced more than 235,000 people and affected nearly a million others in the region.

The mudslides severely damaged roads, bridges, and dams.

The International Organization for Migration said the flood emergency was one of the “harsh realities” of climate change and blamed the devastating impact of El Niño for the catastrophic weather.

The devastating floods in Kenya came following days of heavy rains that killed 21 people in Oman and four in the UAE last month.
