PCG Southern Tagalog issues alert amid security incident in Balayan, Batangas

THE Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog (CGDSTL) alerted all its units taking necessary precautions to maintain the security of coastal areas in the region.

This is in line with the recent security incident that occurred in Barangay Malalay, Balayan, Batangas, on Sunday morning, 17 December 2023.

According to reports from the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division, an encounter took place between armed individuals, including six New People’s Army (NPA) members and one soldier. Ten individuals lost their lives during the incident, and three soldiers sustained injuries, being taken to the hospital in Balayan.

Various weapons and subversive documents were recovered at the scene, and a pursuit operation is conducted at present.

Amidst the current situation, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has elevated its vigilance along coastal areas, implementing enhanced security protocols and intensifying maritime patrol operations in alignment with the Department of Transportation’s activation of Oplan Ligtas Biyahe: Pasko 2023.

Close coordination with local police and armed forces are also established for integrated commitment to security and safety in water transport services, and implementation of security layers in the ports and passenger terminals to prevent hostile elements from perpetrating terrorist acts.

Citizens are also advised to report any suspicious or unusual activities promptly to law enforcement authorities.

The PCG expresses solidarity with the affected individuals and affirms its unwavering commitment to preserving the well-being of coastal regions in the area.
