A group of Pheu Thai supporters demanded for the party distance itself from the Move Forward Party (MFP) amid an ongoing saga as to who should take over the House Speaker position.
It seemed tensions in selecting Thailand’s next House speaker is still far from over as supporters of the Pheu Thai party stepped into the picture.
A faction of its supporters wanted the populist political party founded by the billionaire Shinawatra family to break away from Move Forward Party or MFP as internal disagreement over the House speaker position continues.
Despite the simmering tensions, the majority of the group pledged to uphold Pheu Thai’s commitment to voting for MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat as the next prime minister.
The leader of the group of supporters added they are still backing the idea of the MFP spearheading the creation of a new coalition as well as leading the effort to rewrite the constitution.
The group believes that Pheu Thai, which secured the second-highest number of House seats after the MFP, should have the right to lead the formation of a new coalition in case the MFP is unable to secure enough MPs to establish a new coalition government.
The group also aims to make the MFP realize that forming a government without Pheu Thai’s support would be challenging.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) said it will resume today the investigation into whether Pita Limjaroenrat was eligible to run in the election due to his ownership of shares in a media company.
A rival lawmaker who filed the petition last week argued Pita failed to declare it to the authorities before he was sworn in as an MP during the 2019 election.
