Protests in Israel intensifies after Netanyahu sacks Defense Minister

THE dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant gave Israelis a more valid reason to return to the streets as the so-called ‘Week of Paralysis’ kicked off in Israel.

Gallant was sacked from his post days after he urged the government for an immediate and temporary halt to the government’s controversial plan to overhaul the judiciary.

Moreover, Israel’s Consul General in New York, Asaf Zamir, resigned in response to Netanyahu’s decision to fire the defense minister and said that he is deeply concerned about the direction the country is going in right now.

“I’m deeply concerned about the direction the country is going in right now,” said Asaf Zamir, Israel’s Consul General in New York.

Gallant is the highest-ranking lawmaker in Netanyahu’s government who had openly called for an end to the controversial judicial reform which has been met with massive resistance in Israel and abroad in recent weeks.

Protesters flocked to Tel Aviv on Sunday and blocked the main highway for hours while setting up bonfires.

Crowds also gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s residence in Jerusalem.

The Prime Minister is expected to freeze the legislation in a public address after a night of nationwide protests.

Israel braces for another week of protest events after protesters declared a nationwide “week of paralysis” which started on Sunday.
