SpaceX launches South Korea’s first spy satellite to space, completes landing

THE rivalry between North and South Korea goes beyond space, and recently, Pyongyang and Seoul launched their first spy satellite with the latter completing its landing on Saturday.

A Space X rocket launched South Korea’s first military spy satellite, the reconnaissance satellite.

This was carried by one of Space X Falcon 9 rockets, lifted off from the Vandenberg US Space force base in California on December 2.

The rocket has the word ‘Korea’ emblazoned across it.

Footage shows the Falcon 9 rocket on board, getting ready for launch, the final countdown and liftoff, the space vehicle in flight and the rocket landing.

South Korea aims to launch a total of five spy satellites by 2025 under a contract with Space X to provide 24-hour surveillance over the Korean Peninsula.

The move comes after North Korea successfully launched its own military reconnaissance satellite named ‘Malligyong-1’ last week sparking condemnation from South Korea, the US, and others.

Earlier this week, North Korea claimed that its leader Kim Jong Un received imagery from the newly launched satellite showing the White House, the Pentagon, US aircraft carriers, and a navy base in Virginia.
