Sweden to help Australia in upgrading submarines

AUSTRALIA will be using Sweden’s advanced submarines technology and expertise to modernize its existing underwater fleet.

Sweden’s submarine technology will help upgrade and extend the life of Australia’s Collins-class submarines developed in the 1980s and 1990s.

The vessels will get upgraded using new technology owned by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

The initiative will enable long-term collaboration between the shipyards of both countries.

Saab Kockums AB – a shipyard headquartered in Malmö, Sweden – developed the submarines for Australia decades ago.

Both countries look forward to long-term cooperation in the future.

Sweden owns one of the best submarines in the world and is one of the first countries to pursue a nuclear-powered submarine, starting development in 1957.

The Swedish submarine fleet was born in 1914 while the Swedish Navy marked its 500th anniversary last month.
