PRIME Minister Srettha Thavisin said he felt heavy-hearted when it comes to the country’s economic prospects in 2024 as the administration seeks to address the current economic crisis.
The government is prioritizing the resumption of a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union through investments in infrastructure projects. Talks were suspended in 2014 due to the military coup.
The premier also proposed more sustainable ways to transition to renewable energy and attract foreign investments through the promotion of trade labor, increasing skilled labor, and training additional manpower.
Srettha also expressed concern over low wages wherein employers have been resisting attempts by the government to raise the minimum wage.
The government also proposed its flagship stimulus policy fails through the implementation of the digital wallet handout to low and middle-income Thais likely to start in May 2024.
Under the program, 50-M Thais earning less than 70,000 baht per month will receive a one-time 10, 000 baht ($280) handout of digital money which they need to spend within six months.
Additionally, nearly 90,000 people nationwide have registered for the government’s debt relief program.
Srettha announced the measures as he marked his first 100 days as Prime Minister.
