Thailand verifies number of citizens taken hostage in Israel

THE Israel Embassy dismissed earlier reports stating that 54 Thais were taken captive by Hamas.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry dismissed data released by Reuters, saying that saying Hamas was only holding 18 Thais in captivity, and not 54.

The ministry verified the data by reaching out to the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Nearly 5,000 workers have returned to the country since the conflict broke out though many of them chose to stay in Israel.

Evacuation efforts for those who volunteered to go home continued while the government repeated calls for the release of its citizens held hostage by Hamas.

To recall, Israel’s Permanent Ambassador Gilad Erdan showed a horrifying video of a Thai worker mercilessly killed by a member of Hamas with a garden hoe at the height of the attack

The ambassador also rejected calls for a humanitarian truce but despite this a UN resolution urging immediate ceasefire in Gaza since won majority of votes from 193 members of the UN General Assembly.

Thai nationals also make up the largest group of foreigners killed by Hamas during a deadly surprise attack launched by the group on October 7.
