Thousands flee homes after volcano erupts in Indonesia

ANOTHER volcano is causing fear among residents in Indonesia after a deadly eruption killed nearly two dozen people just a month ago.

The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara on Monday prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 residents.

The evacuees which include pregnant women, older adults, and babies were forced to seek refuge in shelters and depend on aid from authorities and kind-hearted donors.

The government is still collecting data as to the actual number of residents and houses affected by the eruption.

On the same day, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocked central Japan, with the death toll exceeding 60 victims and expected to rise as recovery efforts continue.

To recall, Mt. Marapi – a complex volcano in West Sumatra- erupted in early December and killed 23 people.

Indonesia is said to be the country with the most number of active volcanoes in the world.  The Southeast Asian country sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire – a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes.
