Up to 1,000 cars left stranded in snow as extreme cold grips Sweden

POLICE and rescue teams worked through the night to help free hundreds of vehicles trapped in deep snow on the main E22 road in the Skane area of southern Sweden.

The rescuers evacuated people who were stranded in heavy snow after staying inside their vehicles for more than 24 hours.

The temperature on Wednesday, January 3, saw a reading of minus 43.6 degrees Celsius making it Sweden’s coldest January night in 25 years.

Extreme cold weather has gripped parts of Sweden, Finland, and Norway, while snow storms hit Denmark.

A wave of cold air from Siberia and the Arctic region has swept over western Russia.

An avalanche in Finnish Lapland killed a woman and her son as extreme cold takes over Nordic countries.

The Swedish Armed Forces delivered food and water to drivers who were trapped in the snow for nearly 24 hours.
