The $33 billion infrastructure was launched in 2010 for cargo operations and was expanded in 2013 for passengers.
Once completed, it will be a multi-modal transport infrastructure linking air, land, and sea.
At present, King Fahd International Airport located in Dammam, Saudi Arabia holds the top spot as the largest airport in the world by land area, measured at 776 square kilometers.
Dubai South, the largest urban master developer in the emirate, plans to further expand the area into a business-friendly free zone and provide a diverse range of residential options.
