EU leaders approve €50-B aid for Ukraine

EUROPEAN Union leaders have concurred on 50-B euros or $54-B financial aid for Ukraine which will be distributed over 4 years.

In a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, European Council President Charles Michel said,

”We have a deal on the multiannual financial framework. This agreement allows us to mobilize an additional 50-B euros for Ukraine. It shows the leadership of the European Council. We are united and we won’t be intimidated by Russia”.

The economic aid package will be utilized to pay public sector salaries and keep government departments open, among others.

Previously, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said  he would veto the proposal as they would have no idea where the aid would be spent and accused Ukraine being ‘one of the most corrupt countries in the world.’

In the end, Orban said that the bloc was attempting to ‘blackmail’ him, with previous reports saying that the European Council had planned to cut funding to Hungary if Orban maintained his veto.
