First batch of Thai evacuees arrive from Israel

THE number of Thai nationals seeking to return to the country has significantly increased to thousands in the past 24 hours.

Dozens were lucky enough to return home earlier today to the waiting arms of their families.

41 Thai workers landed in Bangkok on Thursday, with some sharing their harrowing tales of survival after getting stranded in the middle of two warring borders.

As the conflict between Israel and Gaza intensifies, more than 5,000 citizens volunteered to be repatriated to Thailand, from the previous 1,400.

Some of the workers returned to the country with help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the rest had made their own flight arrangements.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin assured the government will deploy more personnel to Israel to ensure quick and safe evacuations of the Thai citizens.

The government is considering whether to evacuate citizens by land through Jordan since the idea of transporting them by boat via the Gaza Strip seemed a dangerous option.

An estimated 30,000 Thais work in Israel, most of them employed in the agriculture sector.

The country’s labor minister assured that foreign and labor ministers are working hard to evacuate Thais to a safe zone and bring them back to Thailand.
