Guatemala’s Volcano Eruption Prompt Evacuation of more than 1,000 residents

GUATEMALA‘S Fuego volcano, the most active in Central America, erupted on Thursday, prompting the evacuation of more than 1,000 people and the closure of a major road.

The volcano spewed thick clouds of ash over farms and nearby towns, causing civil protection officials to evacuate people from five communities near the base of the volcano.

The ash column ejected by Fuego reached more than 6,000 meters above sea level, with ash falling to the west and southwest of the volcano.

With rainfall expected, mudslides could also form, and the authorities have warned of possible stronger emissions.

In 2018, an eruption of the same volcano killed 215 people and left a similar number missing.
