Japan’s spacecraft survives second week on Moon

THE unmanned Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM spacecraft, recently transmitted a signal back to Earth, suggesting it survived another week on the lunar surface despite freezing temperatures.

Japan’s space agency described the incident as a miracle because the lander was not originally expected to survive a lunar night.

Temperatures can go down as low as minus 170 degrees Celsius during a lunar night.

It can be remembered that the spacecraft made a historic landing on the moon on January 19, only to shut down hours later due to limited battery power after it was discovered that its solar panels were facing the wrong direction.

It came back to life on the eighth day after its landing before hibernating.

It came back to life again after transmitting a signal to Earth on Sunday.

The historic touchdown made Japan the fifth country in the world to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon.
