MMDA reminds motorcycle riders to avoid stopping under footbridges to avoid accidents when raining

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) CCTV camera captured these motorcycle riders in the middle of the street this Tuesday afternoon.

The MMDA is appealing to motorcycle riders not to stop or gather under bridges and footbridges when it rains because it will not only cause heavy traffic but may also cause accidents.

In other CCTV footage from the MMDA, some ride-hailing riders also gathered under a flyover in EDSA Monte and occupied a lane.

The MMDA’S post about this garnered various reactions from netizens.

There are those who say that when riders are honked at, they are still angry, while others say that no one dies in the rain, but many die in accidents.

So the MMDA, has repeatedly pleaded with motorcycle riders that when it rains, avoid gathering under bridges and footbridges.

MMDA acting Chairman Atty. Romando Artes explained that it can not only cause traffic but it can also cause an accident.

“It’s also dangerous for them. Imagine, if you are on the highway, and suddenly stopped. You can be run over or hit if other drivers did not notice you,” Atty. Romando Artes, acting Chairman, MMDA said.

MMDA to add lay-bys and tents at gasoline stations to provide shelter during rain

According to Artes, there are lay-bys located under the flyovers where motorists can take shelter when it rains.

Apart from this, the MMDA also sees other solutions to somehow help motorcycle riders.

“We want the approach to be holistic regarding that, so we are studying it including the addition of lay-bys and the same placement of shelters at gas stations along EDSA,” Atty. Romando Artes added.

According to the MMDA, vehicles blocking, stopping, and stopping in the middle of the road may result in a fine of P500.

“As soon as the system is fixed, particularly in gasoline stations, I think we will strictly enforce the issuance of tickets to violators,” according to Artes.
