SURVIVORS of the Whakaari White Island disaster are expected to get millions of dollars worth of compensation more than four years since the incident occured.
The tragic incident happened in December 2019 when the volcano unexpectedly erupted while 47 people where exploring the area.
The disaster killed 22 people and left others seriously injured.
The District Court in Auckland found that companies that controlled the island as well as the tour booking agents were guilty of workplace health and safety legislation after they failed to inform the tourists on safety information before guiding them to the volcano.
The court ordered the tour operators and a local company to pay victims and surviving families $6.2-M in compensation as well as slapped them with a $1.6-M fine.
