Philippines expands high-speed Internet access in 14 provinces

HIGH-speed internet access for the whole Philippines.

This is the goal of the first phase of the National Fiber Backbone (NFB) launched at Sofitel, Pasay City on April 19 this year.

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy said the project will enhance the capacity for Internet connectivity services in various provinces, government offices, and data centers in the Philippines.

The first phase of the NFB 1 has the capability to improve the operations of 346 national and local government offices connected to Govnet.

Govnet, a part of DICT’s national broadband program, provides high-speed internet access to public agencies, schools, and hospitals nationwide.

With the launch of the national fiber backbone phase 1, the government can save approximately 145 million pesos annually.

It will also extend the digital lifeline to over 3,000 free wi-fi sites, providing direct internet access to approximately 750,000 beneficiaries in Regions I, III, and the National Capital Region.

NFB is also dedicated to expediting the development of digital infrastructure to attain the goal of fully connecting the country.

The government aims to complete the National Fiber Backbone project by 2026.
