MULA sa ika-75 na puwesto noong 2021, umakyat sa ika-69 na puwesto ang Pilipinas sa Travel and Tourism Development Index ng World Economic Forum ngayong 2024.
Paliwanag ng United Nations World Tourism Organization na bagama’t may mga magagandang development sa turismo ng Pilipinas sa mga nagdaang panahon, may mga aspeto pa na kailangan pang pagbutihin upang mas maging kaakit-akit ito kumpara sa ibang mga bansa.
“It means that there is a lot of place of improvement. I think it’s very good to know that there are other countries in the region slightly doing better. It’s a good reference point for you to check what they are doing better, what they are doing differently. The government should definitely look into it,” pahayag ni Peter Janech, Coordinator, UNWTO – Innovation, Education and Investments Department.
Kakulangan ng hotel accommodation sa Pilipinas, nananatiling hamon—DOT
Aminado ang Department of Tourism (DOT) na marami pa dapat ang kailangang gawin para mapabuti ang sektor ng turismo upang makaakit ng mas maraming turista.
Isa sa mga hamong tinukoy ni Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco ay ang kakulangan ng tourist accommodation o ng mga hotel sa Pilipinas.
Sa ibinahaging datos ni Frasco ng United Nations World Tourism Organization, napag-iiwanan ang Pilipinas ng Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, at Malaysia sa dami ng available rooms.
Paghikayat ng mas maraming hotel investors sa bansa, tinututukan ng DOT at PHOAI
Katuwang ang Philippine Hotel Owners Association Inc. (PHOAI), tinututukan ngayon ng DOT ang paghihikayat ng mas maraming investor para magpatayo ng karagdagang hotels sa Pilipinas.
Kaugnay nga niyan ay inorganisa ng PHOAI ang Philippine Tourism and Hotel Summit 2024 para talakayin ang malaking potensiyal ng hotel investment sa bansa.
“Base sa data in the ASEAN na kailangan pa nating mag-catch up in terms of number of room. That is why this summit is very timely kasi iniimbitahan natin ‘yung ating mga investors and current owners to further expand in the Philippines and to provide more opportunities for tourism development sa atin mga destination sa Pilipinas,” wika ni Sec. Christina Garcia-Frasco, Department of Tourism.
“Our commitment is to help the government, help the DOT expand the inventory and improve the quality of the facilities and services in the accommodation establishment over the country,” ayon kay Benito Benzon Jr., Executive Director, Philippine Hotel Owners Association Inc.
Inaasahan ayon kay Benito Benzon na sa susunod na apat na taon may 55 hotel project na ide-develop ang PHOAI na magdadagdag ng 15,000 kwarto sa inventory ng bansa.
Karamihan sa mga hotel na ipatatayo ay nasa Bohol, Cebu, Palawan, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Siargao, at Bicol.
Sabi ni Benzon ang mga proyektong ito ay isang magandang indikasyon ng mataas na kumpiyansa ng mga investor sa bansa.
“Investors see opportunities across the country. And this is one advantage that the Philippine has. We have a wide range probably a longer list of destinations that we can offer to our visitors,” dagdag ni Benzon.
Batay sa ulat ng Philippine Hotel Investment Outlook Survey ngayong 2024, mas interesado ang mga hotel developer na mamuhunan sa Bohol na sinundan ng Metro Manila, Cebu, Siargao, at El Nido.
Tinututukan ngayon ng DOT ang pag-develop ng Philippine Hotel Industry Strategic Plan sa layong mapalawak at mapabuti ang nasabing industriya.
Isa sa mga pagtutuunan nito ay ang hotel investment sa mga tourist destination.
“The objective is not only that we continue to invest in our well-known tourist destinations but rather also to open up tourism opportunities sa iba’t ibang isla ng Pilipinas. With 7,741 islands over 80 provinces, there are so many opportunities for tourism infrastructure development,” saad ni Frasco.
Batay sa datos ng DOT, umabot sa P509-B nitong 2023 ang tourism investment sa bansa na mas mataas ng 34.3% kumpara noong 2022.
Ang sektor ng accommodation ang may pinakamalaking ambag sa tourism investment ng Pilipinas.
