SEVERAL allies of Russia urged the EU to continue resisting pressure from the United States and the United Kingdom to seize Moscow’s frozen assets and use the money to fund Ukraine.
Saudi Arabia, China, and Indonesia urged the bloc to reject the proposition of seizing 200 billion euros worth of frozen Russian assets as they fear it will set a precedent.
Ukraine’s Western allies immobilized the assets right after the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Representatives from the three countries reportedly held negotiations with the bloc in private.
The full-fledged war between Russia and Ukraine has entered its second year, with no end in sight to the chaos.
For the West, Russia’s defeat is not just a trophy worthy of conquest but will also mark the end of a prolonged responsibility in funding Ukraine.
The United States is campaigning to seize Russia’s assets amid rising concerns that countries supporting Ukraine are reaching the point of exhaustion in providing billions worth of humanitarian aid and weapons.
