Silent war: Israel builds Cyber Dome to counter Iranian hackers

FOR years, the air defense system Iron Dome has protected Israelis from short-range weapons.

This time, Israelis will build a facility known as Cyber Dome to counter hackers, as tensions with Iran expand from land to cyberspace.

Israel foiled around 800 major cyber-attacks since the war with Hamas started on October 7, 2023, according to the Israeli National Cyber Directorate.

Israel accused Iranian hackers of targeting government organizations, military infrastructure, and civil infrastructure such as hospitals which escalated since last year.

Plans to build a state-of-the-art facility to protect all of Israeli cyberspace have been under negotiations since 2022.

A report from technology giant Microsoft warned that Iran was behind 24 “cyber-enabled influence operations” in 2022, while hackers supported by the regime are expanding their operations by including disinformation campaigns in their playbook.

Israel’s announcement to counter cyberterrorism linked to Iran coincides with ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire with Hamas which is an ally of the Islamic Republic.
