AFTER eight years of severed ties, Iran and Sudan have officially resumed diplomatic relations, and exchanged ambassadors.
On July 21st of this year, Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan welcomed Iran’s new ambassador, Hassan Shah Hosseini, in Port Sudan.
Simultaneously, Sudan appointed Abdulaziz Hassan Saleh as its new ambassador to Tehran.
According to Sudan’s Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Hussein al-Amin, the exchange of ambassadors marks the beginning of a new phase in Sudan-Iran relations.
On the same day, Sudan’s new ambassador to Iran departed for Tehran and is anticipated to resume his duties shortly.
The restoration of ties follows a mutual agreement in October 2023 to restore relations, which had been severed in 2016 in solidarity with Saudi Arabia after an attack on the Saudi embassy in Iran.
