Thailand’s former PM Thaksin appears in public for first time since parole

THAILAND’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was seen traveling to his hometown in Chiang Mai for a three-day trip using his private jet on Thursday.

The controversial billionaire appeared for the first time since he was released on parole on February 18 due to his age and health.

Thaksin was immediately arrested shortly after returning to Thailand in August last year.

The 74-year-old billionaire faced charges related to corruption and abuse of power and only served six months out of his reduced eight-year sentence.

The King of Thailand reduced his eight-year sentence to one year in September last year and was one of the 930 prisoners who were granted parole last month.

The controversial political figure and business tycoon was ousted from power through a military coup in 2006 and returned to the country last year after spending 15 years in self-imposed exile.
