Thousands of Italian workers protest over government budget plan

TENS of thousands of workers held a strike over the Italian government’s budget plans for next year, all of the protesters participated in a massive rally held on Rome Piazza del Popolo on Friday.

The protest was organized by two of Italy’s main national labor unions, the U.I.L and C.G.I.L.

Both unions criticized the draft budget, saying that it threatens the well-being of workers and that it contains measures that would limit workers’ right to strike to address grievances.

The people who participated in the strike came from various industries, including public management, public transportation, health sector, education, and more.

Demonstrators showed their opposition to social welfare and pension cuts envisioned in the Italian 2024 budget law.

People were seen carrying banners against Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and her administration.

The organizers of the demonstration said nearly 60,000 people took part in the protest in Rome.

The protest also prompted public transport to pause for several hours. Schools were also closed during the said strike.
