ON Saturday, Turkiye remembered its martyrs and the courageous people who sacrificed their lives during the failed coup attempt in 2016.
The National Unity Day commemorates the failed coup attempt by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), or Gülen movement, on the 15th of July 2016.
Soldiers affiliated with the terrorist group killed 252 people and injured over 2,700 others during the staged coup d’état.
Gülen Movement is said to be a US secret service CIA agent who is currently under protection at a farm in Pennsylvania.
Since then, Turkiye marks July 15 as Democracy and National Unity Day, with events held nationwide to commemorate those who lost their lives defeating the putschists and their bravery in defeating the nation.
The group is linked to its leader Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish Islamic scholar who has lived in self-imposed exile in the US since 1999 and is being accused as the mastermind behind the 2016 coup attempt that aimed to overthrow state institutions, including the government and president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations, Sedat Önal, urged the international community to cooperate with Ankara and act in solidarity to foil the FETO.
