UAE sends 200 tonnes of aid as Kenya floods kill hundreds

THE latest round of urgent aid was part of a pledge made by UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to send 55 million Dirhams ($15 million) in aid for flood victims in the African country earlier this month.

The relief aid included essential food supplies and medical equipment.

Three weeks ago, authorities in Kenya ordered the mandatory evacuations of residents living near dams and water reservoirs before Cyclone Hidaya made landfall.

Troops were deployed to evacuate everyone living in flood-prone areas.

Weeks of heavy rain and floods resulted in nearly 300 deaths and the displacement of thousands of civilians.

The severe weather submerged or destroyed dozens of schools across the country, raising the risk of waterborne diseases.

The UAE pledged to continue providing necessary humanitarian aid to Kenya.
