THE head of the National Assembly, the fourth most important politician in Vietnam, resigned following allegations of violating party regulations that affected its reputation.
The resignation of National Assembly Chair Vuong Dinh Hue happened amid an intensified anti-corruption campaign that rocked political and business elites in the country.
The parliament chief voluntarily stepped down from his position days after his assistant Pham Thai Ha, deputy speaker of Vietnam’s National Assembly, was arrested on charges of abusing his position and power for personal gain concerning a corruption probe on a real estate firm.
Vietnam’s Communist Party accepted Hue’s voluntary resignation.
Additionally, investigators found that Hue had violated Party regulations which affected the reputation of the organization and the State.
He is the fourth high-ranking Vietnamese official to have resigned from his post within a year as part of the government’s intensified anti-corruption campaign known as the Blazing Furnace.
The parliament chief’s resignation happened more than a month after a local court issued a death penalty sentence to a real estate tycoon for orchestrating the largest fraud case in the history of Vietnam.
