REPORTS emerged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought Chinese support for his country’s peace plan, however, Chinese Premier Li Qiang shot down his request for a meeting at the World Economic Forum (WEF) gathering in Davos.
Following this reports, Zelenskyy on Thursday claimed that he had not actually sought to talk with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the W.E.F, and that Li is not the person making the decisions in China.
“I would like to meet with the leader of China. As far as I know, the leader of China is Xi Jinping, and he makes decisions. And I make decisions in Ukraine,” Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine stated.
Zelenskyy’s words came after a Politico report said that several days before the World Economic Forum took place, Ukrainian official, Andrey Yermak, said that talks between Ukraine and China would be essential to push Kyiv’s peace plan.
Meanwhile, a senior U.S. Official told Politico that China rejected Ukraine’s request for a meeting at some point during their mutual visits in Switzerland.
Another American official said that Beijing has ruled out any diplomatic encounters with Kyiv.
It can also be noted that representatives coming from 83 countries gathered in the Alpine resort recently to discuss Ukraine’s 10-point peace proposal to end the conflict.
However, China did not send a representative to the talks, and the discussion ended without a joint communique being issued.
Meanwhile, another senior Ukrainian official told Politico that no meeting between Zelenskyy and Li was planned to begin with.
Ukraine’s 10-point-plan was strongly rejected by Russia, as Moscow also has its own peace plan to solve the conflict.
China also has a peace proposal for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which was welcomed by Russia.
Ukraine’s peace plan, on the other hand, received support from its western backers.
