AUSTRALIA emerged as a global hotspot for fatal shark attacks in 2023, according to recent international research.
The study finds that of the 69 unprovoked bites worldwide, 22% were recorded in Australia.
Researchers focused on bites occurring in a shark’s natural habitat without being provoked by humans.
The data was released by researchers from the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.
Meanwhile, out of 10 fatal attacks recorded internationally, four of them were witnessed in Australia.
The data was released a week after a woman was attacked while swimming in Sydney Harbour, leaving her with severe injuries.
The attack sparked debate over anti-shark measures in Australia amid concerns warmer waters are attracting more bull sharks to the harbor and nearer to people.
