China expects 9 billion trips during Lunar New Year Season

THE Lunar New Year creates the world’s largest mass migration each year as millions of people travel back to their hometowns to reunite with their families.

The 40-day travel rush linked to the Lunar New Year holidays has started in China.

The Lunar New Year falls on February 10 of this year but the festive vibe starts in late January when millions of people travel back home to reunite with their families.

As many as nine billion domestic trips are expected to be made during the 40-day travel rush.

Of this number, about 80% will be self-driving road trips, while the rest will be made by air, water, and train rides.

The Beijing Capital International Airport alone is expected to serve 7.2 million passenger trips during the said period.

The Lunar New Year is the most popular holiday in China and Chinese communities around the world. It is also the busiest period of mass migration observed every year.
