Cyprus to resume peace talks after Turkish election

CYPRIOT President Nikos Christodoulides hopes that reunification talks with Ankara will resume after the May 14 Elections in Turkiye.

The newly-elected President who assumed the post in February made a promise to break the deadlock in the ethnically divided island.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkiye invaded it n 1974 in response to a military coup backed by Greece.

The Mediterranean Island is controlled by the Turkish Cypriots in the North and The Greek Cypriots in the South.

Ankara does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus although it is recognized internationally and controls two-thirds of the island.

Several attempts to find a compromise settlement over the years have failed, while relations while Greek and Turkish Cypriots have moved farther apart since a failed summit in 2017.

The Cypriot President hopes the Earthquake Diplomacy that made them united in the election promise.
