DENR NCR joins all cyclists in celebrating World Bicycle Day today

The UN General Assembly declares June 3 as “World Bicycle Day” to “encourage stakeholders to emphasize and advance the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace”.

Studies have shown that moderate-intensity physical activity—such as walking, cycling, or playing sports—has significant benefits for human health and the environment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), walking and cycling not only help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and other diseases but also offer commuters an environment-friendly and cost-effective type of transportation.

Providing necessary support infrastructure for cyclists can help cities improve air quality and reduce harmful emissions. To this end, the DENR National Capital Region supports and encourages the efforts of the local governments of Metro Manila to provide bike lanes and assistance to bikers.
