EU agrees ‘historic’ deal on regulation of artificial intelligence

THE European Union (EU) struck a landmark deal agreeing to one of the first major comprehensive artificial intelligence (A.I.) laws in the world.

This historic deal, called the AI Act, sets up a framework to promote AI development while addressing the risks associated with the said technology.

The AI Act bans harmful practices that the measure considers to be a clear threat to people’s safety, livelihoods, and rights.

According to Thierry Breton, an EU Commissioner, 100 people had been in a room for almost 3 days to pass the deal.

Breton described the plans as historic, and that it set clear rules for A.I. use.

The EU commissioner also described the AI Act as much more than a rule book— it’s a launch pad for EU start-ups and researchers to lead the global AI race.

The European parliament is set to vote on the AI Act proposals in early 2024, however, any legislation on this will not take effect until at least 2025.
