Extradition of former Cong. Arnie Teves, still on trial in Timor-Leste—legal counsel

AFTER the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that the extradition case of former Cong. Arnie Teves has passed the initial screening by the Ministry of Justice in Timor-Leste, his legal counsel has vehemently refuted these claims, labeling them as ‘fake news’.

“It’s ridiculous what our DOJ is doing and the people involved in this case like Mayor Janice Degamo who are saying fake news and disinformation,” stated Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, Legal Counsel, Former Rep. Arnie Teves.

Legal counsel of former Congressman Arnie Teves Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, emphasized that the statements made by the DOJ in relation to the extradition case to Timor-Leste of the former legislator are considered false information.

Topacio said that the Philippine government’s request to extradite Teves cannot be considered news worthy or an achievement yet.

“That’s not newsworthy, that’s not an achievement. Because no matter which country has their procedure under civil law, the actual procedure is the same when a request for extradition is tried, added Topacio.

To recall last week, the DOJ is already expecting the extradition of Teves although the agency is still waiting for the decision of the Court of Appeals of Timor-Leste after it passed the first screening at the ministry of justice.

According to DOJ Spokesperson Mico Clavano, it is estimated that it will take weeks before the Court of Appeals of Timor-Leste issues a decision.
