BUO ang suporta ng dalawang grupo ng pediatricians sa vaccination program ng pamahalaan para sa mga bata na nasa edad 5 hanggang 11 taong gulang.
Kabilang sa mga grupo ang Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) at ang Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP).
Inisyal na isinagawa ang bakunahan sa anim na lugar sa Metro Manila para sa mga bata ngayong araw.
Inihayag din ng pediatrician groups ang pangamba sa mga kumakalat na ulat kaugnay sa ilang mga doktor na nagdulot ng takot at pag-aatubili sa mga magulang.
“Let us be clear and unequivocal. COVID-19 disease directly affects children and may lead to serious consequences. Children 5 to 11 years of age are at risk of severe illness from COVID-19,” ayon sa pinagsanib na pahayag ng PPS at PIDSP.
Ayon pa sa grupo, madalas sa mga bata edad 5 hanggang 11 taong gulang ang Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).
“Unfortunately, some of us in our practice have already encountered a few pediatric patients with MIS-C, a few of whom have succumbed to the illness. Other post-COVID conditions have also been seen in the age group, including long COVID. Though majority of the children infected with SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) present with asymptomatic or mild disease, MISC-C and post-COVID conditions can and typically occur after asymptomatic or mild infection,” ayon sa pahayag.
Kabilang din sa hindi direktang epekto ng COVID-19 pandemic sa mga bata ang lumalalang kalusugan sa mental at emosyonal, lumalawak na education gaps, kumukunting aktibidad sa pisikal, at pagtaas ng body mass index, kumukunting routine immunizations, at pagtaas ng Adverse Childhood Experience.
“Broad vaccination implementation would reduce the public health burden of COVID-19 in children 5-11 years of age,” saad nito.
