Indonesia deploys 25,000 security personnel to secure election

THE Indonesian National Police (INP) has mobilized at least 25,000 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel to secure the 2024 national elections.

The deployment was part of Operation Mantap Brata 2023-2024 which aims to maintain order during voting and vote counting.

The Mobile Brigade includes riot control units, bomb disposal units, anti-riot squads, drone units, search and rescue teams, and rapid response teams.

A Contingency Operation was also created to address disturbances such as public order issues, natural disasters, terrorism, and social conflicts.

More than 200 million eligible voters will visit voting centers across Indonesia on February 14, 2024, to elect the new batch of national leaders in the world’s third-largest democracy.

To recall, an estimated 100 students rallied in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta on Wednesday to oppose outgoing President Joko Widodo’s perceived political interference in the upcoming elections.

This came after Indonesian President Joko Widodo, more popularly known as Jokowi, was seen making public appearances with frontrunner Prabowo Subianto.

Subianto is the running mate of Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is running for vice presidency.

However, Jokowi promised not to join any campaign events and has not publicly endorsed any of the three presidential candidates in the election.

The Indonesian Government heightened security amid concerns unforeseen events might arise during and after the election.
