Indonesian presidential candidates to challenge election results

TWO Indonesian presidential candidates who appeared to be at the losing end want to challenge the results of last month’s election.

Indonesia’s former provincial governors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, want to file a complaint to the Constitutional Court amid allegations of widespread fraud.

More than 204 million registered voters in Indonesia cast their ballots in the world’s third-largest democracy on February 14.

The election showed current Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto running the lead and claiming victory on election day.

Unofficial tallies showed that he won the poll with nearly 60% of the votes on that day.

As of Thursday, March 14, the General Election Commission has officially tallied more than 78% of the votes, with Subianto taking 58.82%, Baswedan at 24.50% and Pranowo at 16.68%.

The two losing camps are preparing to file a petition to the Constitution Court to challenge the results.

Subianto is also the running mate of incumbent President Joko Widodo’s 36-year-old son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who ran as vice president.
