Iraq to send fuel to Lebanon amid fears of nationwide blackout

IRAQI Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani approved to sending of fuel to Lebanon to address the power shortage caused by the economic crisis.

Al Sudani approved the shipment after a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati to prevent a potential blackout.

A devastating economic crisis that started in 2019 has exacerbated the power shortage.

Residents in Lebanon have access to electricity for a maximum of around four hours a day while those who want to have power beyond the allotted time rely on expensive private generators powered by diesel.

Lebanon is required to import heavy fuel oil from Iraq under a swap deal signed in 2021.
