Japan to dump nuclear wastewater into Pacific Ocean on Thursday

THIS coming Thursday, Japan will start its release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant into the sea, and this decision comes weeks after United Nation’s nuclear watchdog approved the plan, however, the move received strong opposition from various groups, and neighboring countries.

With one around one million tons of water, the said amount could fill up 500 Olympic size pools stored at the tsunami-hit Fukushima Plant since 2011.

Japanese authorities also asked plant operators to prepare its disposal on August 24 if the sea and weather are in proper condition.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the plant on Sunday following speculations that Japan is not ready for is discharge plan.

According to the Japanese government, the release of wastewater is dire for the plant’s process of decommissioning.

The nuclear wastewater will be released from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant after thirty years of filtration and dilution.

Japan has been storing and collecting the radioactive water in tanks for more than 10 years, and their space is running out.
