JMCFI triumphs: Standout success as delegates join leading Tropical Medicine Conference in Bangkok

MEDICAL student researchers and Faculty from the Jose Maria College Foundation, Inc. (JMCFI), recently attended the Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting (JITMM) held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The delegation arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 13 to participate in the three-day JITMM conference hosted by Mahidol University’s School of Tropical Medicine.

The conference serves as an annual scientific gathering focused on research presentations and the exchange of ideas aimed at addressing global health concerns.

This year’s JITMM conference centered around the theme, “Achieving the SDGs: Human and AI-driven Solutions for Tropical Medicine in a Changing World.”

It attracted a diverse array of experts, researchers, healthcare professionals, and students from various countries.

The focal points of discussion included advancements and strategies related to tropical diseases, climate health, and overall global well-being.

Under the leadership of Dr. Nestor S. Arce, Jr., the College of Medicine Dean at JMCFI and an esteemed alumnus of Mahidol University, the delegation showcased their research on schistosomiasis control and elimination at the conference.

The team, comprised of selected students such as Wynzi Centillas, Maria Gracia Dimagnaong, Trishia Joy Jandayan, Joshua Agawin, Dave Anchangco, Ram Pesante, alongside Dr. Raymond Libongcogon, presented their work through a poster presentation that had been chosen by the conference organizers.

The research focuses on assessing if Agusan Del Sur residents understand and follow the Schistosomiasis Control and Elimination Program to promote a healthier community.

It aims to tackle the increasing incidence of schistosomiasis despite existing control efforts, aiming to fill crucial research gaps to combat the disease in the Philippines and beyond.

The JMCFI medical students, participating in their first international exposure, aim to ignite a passion for research, specifically focusing on prevalent infectious and tropical diseases in Davao City.

This immersive experience not only encourages concentrated study but also promises to broaden their medical horizons, laying a foundation for significant advancements in their academic pursuits.

Furthermore, adding to their accomplishments, JMCFI’s team secured the top position in the JITMM Tropical Medicine Quiz Contest, known as “Tug-of-War 2.0.”

Their victory highlighted not only their exceptional skills but also their unwavering determination and commitment to excellence throughout the competition, earning them recognition among their peers at the conference.

During the conference’s third day, the delegation embarked on a benchmarking tour at Mahidol University’s Hospital of Tropical Diseases. The delegates were warmly welcomed by Dr. Prakaykaew Charunwatthana, a Thai researcher, and Dr. Anastacia Putri, an Indonesian travel medicine specialist.

The researchers took the opportunity to express gratitude for the steadfast support provided by JMCFI’s management, faculty, and Founding President, Rev. Pastor Dr. Apollo C. Quiboloy.

The visit highlighted the pivotal role of research at JMCFI, as emphasized by Dean Arce, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the institution’s endeavors.

In addition to their academic endeavors, the delegation explored various historical sites across Thailand, including the ancient city, Grand Palace, Maeklong Market famous for its unique umbrella pulldown market, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market where goods are sold from boats and experienced elephant trekking. The entire delegation was accommodated at the KJC headquarters in Thailand.

During their stay, they had the opportunity to visit and witness firsthand the transformative impact of the Gift of Education, a program initiated by Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

Their experience included warm receptions, captivating performances, and insightful facility tours.

Looking ahead, JMCFI- College of Medicine has already begun preparations for next year’s tropical medicine conference, aiming to continue its academic engagement and fulfil its vision of delivering sustainable healthcare and fostering community impact.
