A Swedish parliamentary committee recommended for the military to increase its annual military budget by nearly 54 billion kronor ($5 billion) by 2030.
The move will help strengthen the Nordic country’s air defenses and boost its number of conscripts.
A report submitted by the Defense Committee showed that Sweden’s entry as the 32nd member of North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) highlighted a serious security situation that require higher ambitions.
According to the 300-page report, Sweden must purchase more hunting and cruise missiles as well as expand its air defense to meet threats from unmanned flying craft.
The committee said the navy should also receive more personnel and increase the number of its conscripts from the current 8,000 to 12,000 in 2032, adding that an armed attack against Sweden or its allies cannot be ruled out.
Sweden officially became the newest member of NATO on March 7, 2024.
