Leaders of S. Korea, Japan to attend Aug. 18 Summit—White House

ON August 18 President Joe Biden will host Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for a trilateral summit to be held in Maryland.

White House Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said the three leaders will be discussing their expanding trilateral cooperation as well as addressing the ongoing issues regarding North Korea.

“The three leaders will discuss expanding trilateral cooperation across the Indo-Pacific and beyond – including to address the continued threat posed by (North Korea) and to strengthen ties with ASEAN and the Pacific Islands,” Karine Jean-Pierre, Whitehouse spokesperson said.

In addition, Washington has been keen to encourage closer cooperation with its main allies in Asia.

The three leaders will be on a storied presidential retreat in the mountains of Western Maryland and will advance a shared trilateral vision for addressing global and regional security challenges as well to promote a rule-based international order and bolster economic property.

With the recovering and improving relationship between Japan and South Korea they continue to further mend the strained bilateral ties coming from years of feud over historical issues.
