SOME passengers of an overnight service ferry were seen jumping in the water after their vessel caught fire on Thursday.
The overnight ferry departed from Surat Thani province and was about to arrive at Koh Tao, a popular tourist destination when the blaze occurred.
One of the passengers alerted the others after smelling smoke and hearing a crackling sound.
The scene of the tragedy happened near the notorious “Death Island” where two British backpackers were murdered in 2014.
Some passengers suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.
All 108 passengers onboard were evacuated safely to shore.
Authorities suspected the fire had started from the engine compartment.
Investigation to determine the cause of the fire continues.
