THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), through the Office of Commissioner Walter Torres, continues to champion Adaptive Sports, ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate and excel in sports.
Yesterday, Comm. Torres attended the Special Olympics Pilipinas (SOP) Badminton Championship at Pasay City East High School, where athletes with intellectual disabilities showcased their skills, teamwork, and passion for the game.
He was welcomed by SOP board members Martin Lichauco, Roche Vandenberghe, and Armand Galicia, including SOP Sports Program Manager Zoren Alfonso.
The event united participants from Unified Champion Schools and SOP Sports Clubs, promoting inclusion and unity through sports.
PSC’s support for adaptive sports extends beyond badminton.
Last March 10, Comm. Torres attended the Adaptive Athletes University Tour at the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) where a 3×3 Basketball Tournament was held.
At CSB, he was received by Sports Director and fellow ’92 Barcelona Olympian, Stephen Fernandez, along with John Darnell Castro, founder of Project Empower.
The tour, organized by Project Empower and its partners, highlights the growing community of adaptive basketball players.
PSC’s participation reinforces its commitment to inclusive sports development, in line with its role as a subcommittee on National Amateur Sports and Physical Activities (NASPA) under the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA).
On March 31, PSC is set to conduct the Adaptive Amazing Race in celebration of Women with Disabilities Day.
