Republicans nominate Trump-aligned Jim Jordan for House Speaker role

IN an internal vote, Republicans have nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio as their candidate for the position of House Speaker.

Jordan is a staunch ally of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump.

He is now standing as a central figure in the Republican bid for the position second in line to the presidency.

His selection follows the unexpected ouster of Kevin McCarthy.

Jordan, a founding member of the Freedom Caucus, aims to unite the deeply divided House GOP majority ahead of a public floor vote, which is anticipated to take place possibly next week.

The internal vote resulted in a 124-81 split among Republicans, with a second secret ballot slightly increasing Jordan’s support.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy expressed confidence in Jordan.

“I think Jordan would do a great job. We got to get this back on track,” Kevin McCarthy House Minority Leader, said.

Meanwhile, Democrats will nominate Hakeem Jeffries, although he has no chance of getting elected as Speaker as the Democrats is the minority party in the chamber.

House Republicans have been fighting over whom should replace McCarthy to lead their party.

The search for the new House Speaker of the U.S. Congress also comes amid a looming government shutdown.

The Continuing Resolution that the House and Senate arrived at in September to continue to funding the U.S. federal government which is set to expire on November 17.
