THE United States and the European Union on Wednesday warned Kosovo to back down or face consequences.
The statement comes amid its standoff with ethnic Serbs in northern parts of Kosovo.
Just recently, the US and the EU sent envoys to visit Kosovo and Serbia to calm heightened tensions.
Recent battles have led to the injury of dozens of NATO peacekeeping soldiers in the area.
In a statement, US envoy to The Western Balkans said,
“The actions taken or not taken could have some consequences that will affect parts of the relationship (between Kosovo and the United States), I don’t want to get there,” said Gabriel Escobar, U.S. Envoy to the Western Balkans.
However, there have been no further elaborations on what these consequences would be.
It can be noted that violence ensued when Kosovo authorities placed ethnic Albanian mayors who were elected to their offices in elections that saw less than 5 percent of voters come out to vote.
The said election was boycotted by ethnic Serbs who in the majority are in northern Kosovan cities.
To add, the United States and the European Union have called on Kosovan Prime Minister Albin Kurti to withdraw the mayors from their offices and to pull out the special police units that helped install them from the northern municipalities.
