U.S. offers Houthis incentives to stop Red Sea attacks

INCENTIVES and easing of sanctions in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a and the city of Hodeidah.

These were some of the perks offered by the United States to Houthi rebels for them to stop attacking cargo vessels in the Red Sea.

Political sources from Yemen made the revelation in a recent exclusive interview with UAE’s state-owned English daily newspaper The National.

However, political sources added that incentives are not enough. U.S. officials should also reconsider its designation of the Houthis as a terrorist organization and recognize its authority in some areas of Yemen to reach a consensus.

The United States refused to comment about the alleged incentives.

The escalating Houthi attacks in the Red Sea since October last year have disrupted global maritime trade and forced companies to either close or find an alternative route which often leads to longer shipping time and more expensive transport costs.
