PHILIPPINE Airport authorities took action on the bed bug issue that went viral online involving two passengers who got bitten after they sat on rattan chairs at terminals 2 and 3.
A passenger shared an alarming photo of rashes on their thighs and other parts of the body.
They warned fellow NAIA passengers not to sit on the rattan chairs at Terminal 2, which allegedly caused the rashes.
In an official statement, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Eric Ines assured stringent sanitation measures at NAIA Terminals to prevent further complications with airport facilities.
MIAA takes action to bed bug reports at NAIA Terminals 2 and 3
General Manager Eric Ines immediately ordered the Terminal Managers to look into the matter and provide him with a report within 24 hours stating the circumstances surrounding the incidents and their recommended corrective actions to put an end to this problem.
Ines has requested a follow-up report from airport managers within 24 hours to assess the results of the implemented sanitation measures.
MIAA also apologized to the passengers and ensured a swift resolution to the issue. Medical assistance was also provided to those affected by bed bug bites by MIAA medical teams.
The MIAA apologizes to the victims and assures them that a speedy resolution to this can be expected.
Following an investigation, it was confirmed that our terminals received these complaints and that two of those who were bitten sought and were given medical assistance by our MIAA medical teams.
MIAA stated that the sources of bed bugs, including the identified seats, have been permanently removed from NAIA.
Scheduled disinfection measures will also continue.
The rattan chairs reportedly came from the Department of Tourism (DOT).
The seats identified in the reports have been pulled out permanently while disinfection schedules shall continue to be undertaken.
The rattan chairs, which were identified as the source of the bed bugs, were part of a project by the DOT.
As of now, the DOT has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
